The Main River Towns
The hidden middle of the voyage: Franconian wine, baroque palaces and half-timbered streets.

Ask travelers who have finished the full route what surprised them most, and many will name the Main. The Rhine and the Danube are famous; the Main, winding through northern Bavaria’s Franconia region, is not — yet its towns are some of the best-preserved in Germany.
| Town | Why stop |
|---|---|
| Miltenberg | A long main street of half-timbered houses below a castle; sometimes a short walking stop. |
| Wertheim | Where the Tauber meets the Main, with a castle ruin above the rooftops. |
| Würzburg | The Residence, a vast baroque palace with a celebrated staircase fresco by Tiepolo, plus the Marienberg Fortress and the Old Main Bridge. |
| Bamberg | An old town built over seven hills, with its Old Town Hall standing on a bridge in the river; known for smoked beer. |
| Nuremberg | Imperial Castle, Old Town walls and the Documentation Center on the former Nazi rally grounds. |
Würzburg
Würzburg is the capital of Franconian wine country. The prince-bishops’ Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is usually the main tour. Afterwards, walk to the Old Main Bridge, lined with statues of saints, and join locals with a glass of Franconian wine looking up at the fortress.

Bamberg and Nuremberg
Bamberg escaped major wartime damage, and its old town is UNESCO-listed. The Old Town Hall sits on a little island in the Regnitz, reached by bridges from either side. Nuremberg, a short sail away on the canal, was an imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire; its castle and walls were rebuilt after 1945. Many lines include a tour that touches on the city’s 20th-century history as well as its medieval past.
Making the Most of the Main
- Wear good shoes: Würzburg’s fortress and Bamberg’s hills are steep.
- Try the local specialties: Franconian wine in its flat Bocksbeutel bottle, Bamberg’s Rauchbier, Nuremberg sausages and gingerbread.
- Ask whether the Residence tour is included — on most lines it is.
- If you want more time in Nuremberg, consider ending a split itinerary there.

Scenic sailing on the Main
Between the towns, the Main is a sequence of gentle loops through vineyards, forest and red sandstone villages. Ships pass through locks every few hours, and the slow climb is part of the experience: sit on deck with a coffee and watch lock-keepers’ houses, cyclists on the riverside paths and steep vineyard slopes around Volkach and Sommerhausen go by. On many itineraries this is the quietest stretch of the whole voyage, a welcome pause between the big-city days of Cologne and Vienna.
