One Waterway From the North Sea to the Black Sea

Rhine Main Danube river cruises exist because of a single piece of engineering: the Main-Danube Canal. Completed in 1992, it runs about 171 kilometres from Bamberg on the Main to Kelheim on the Danube. With it, a river ship can sail from Rotterdam to the Danube delta without ever going to sea.

16 locks

Most of the climb happens on the northern ramp from Bamberg up to the summit; a shorter southern ramp descends along the Altmühl valley to Kelheim.

The summit

At roughly 406 metres above sea level, the summit reach crosses the European watershed. Rain falling on one side flows to the North Sea, on the other to the Black Sea.

A long history

Charlemagne attempted a link, and King Ludwig I of Bavaria built a smaller canal in the 1800s. The modern canal replaced it.

Nuremberg

Ships stop at Nuremberg’s canal harbour for the Old Town and the Imperial Castle.

What You See From the Deck

The canal is not a narrow ditch: it is a broad, managed waterway through Franconian farmland and forest, with high lock chambers, bridges and, near Kelheim, the wooded Altmühl valley. Some locks are deep enough that the walls tower over the ship as it rises. Parts of the crossing happen at night on many itineraries, so ask whether the summit stretch falls in daylight on your departure.

Low bridges are a feature of the Main and the canal. Ships fold down their wheelhouses and sun-deck railings, and the top deck may be closed for a while. It is all routine.

Kelheim and the Danube Gorge

Where the canal meets the Danube, many lines offer an excursion to Weltenburg Abbey through the narrow Danube Gorge, or a stop in nearby Regensburg, whose medieval Stone Bridge and cathedral open the Danube chapter of the trip. From here the river is wider and the pace changes again. For a Danube-only trip, see Danube Riverboat Cruises; for Bavarian travel information, Germany’s national tourist board.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high does the ship climb on the Main-Danube Canal?

The summit stretch lies about 406 metres above sea level — often described as the highest point on Earth reached by commercial vessels coming from the sea. The locks lift ships from the Main at Bamberg and lower them toward the Danube at Kelheim.

Do I need to do anything during the locks?

No. Locking is handled by the crew. Many guests enjoy watching from the sun deck, though it may be closed under low bridges or in some locks.

Do all Rhine Main Danube river cruises cross the whole canal?

Full Amsterdam–Budapest sailings do. Shorter itineraries may turn around at Nuremberg or join the Danube at Regensburg or Passau.
